Extreme Heatwave Sweeps Across Europe
Since June 18, a severe heatwave has shattered temperature records across Europe and led to at least 40 drowning deaths. All victims had entered bodies of water seeking relief from the heat. Meteorologists identified June 25 as the worst day of the heatwave so far.
France experienced its hottest day ever recorded on June 24, with an average temperature of 30°C. In the town of Palluaud, the mercury hit 43.8°C. French authorities issued a red alert for 72 departments starting Thursday afternoon. In response, President Emmanuel Macron convened a special intergovernmental crisis committee, and some 250,000 emergency personnel have been deployed nationwide. National railway operator SNCF canceled over 70 trains, while nearly 850 schools across France remained shut.
Other Nations See Record-Breaking Temperatures
The United Kingdom broke its June temperature record three times in a single day, peaking at 36.1°C in Gosport, Hampshire. This new high surpassed the previous record of 35.6°C, which had stood since 1976. Spain forecast temperatures of up to 44°C in river valleys, prompting officials to cancel a public screening of a 2026 World Cup qualifier match on a giant screen in Madrid.
In Germany, evening peak-hour electricity prices soared to €545 per megawatt-hour, the highest level since June 2024. Rome was hit by a severe hailstorm, adding to regional challenges. French meteorologists have compared this heatwave to the deadly 2003 episode, which claimed nearly 15,000 lives. A cooldown is not expected until the end of the week, and France is bracing for tropical nights where temperatures will not drop below 27°C.
Ukraine recorded a high of 32°C on June 25, with thunderstorms in the south. The real heat is forecast to arrive around June 29. As officials from the Met Office noted:
“We’re not done yet.”
This extreme heatwave has triggered widespread consequences, including loss of life, record-breaking temperatures, and significant economic disruptions. Governments are taking urgent action to protect their populations, such as canceling school sessions and halting transport services. Weather forecasts for the coming days suggest conditions could worsen, requiring continued and proactive measures across the region to mitigate the damage from these extreme weather events.
