Record Heatwave Triggers Blackouts Across France
Massive Power Outages Hit France Amid Scorching Temperatures
According to Главком: An unprecedented heatwave sweeping through Western Europe has caused widespread electricity disruptions in France. Thousands of households in the northern part of the country lost power due to a strained energy grid and a transformer failure. In response, authorities declared the highest alert level across dozens of departments to ensure public safety.
Restoration Efforts Prioritize Critical Facilities
Hospitals, nursing homes, and other essential infrastructure have been given top priority during power restoration efforts. Generators are being rushed to social care institutions to keep them operational. Meanwhile, nearly 850 schools have temporarily closed, and additional restrictions have been imposed on residents in several regions.
At least three people have died as a result of the extreme weather. In some parts of France, temperatures could reach +43°C, causing significant strain on the electricity supply. The heatwave is also affecting neighboring countries:
- Spain and Portugal are seeing temperatures climb to +44°C;
- Germany is bracing for highs of up to +38°C;
- The United Kingdom has issued emergency warnings due to the heat.
This heatwave echoes the severe weather event of 2003, and high temperatures are expected to persist for several more days. Starting June 29, most regions of Ukraine are also forecast to experience a return of 30°C heat.
The situation highlights how vulnerable energy systems are during extreme weather events-a growing concern in the face of climate change. French and neighboring authorities are working to respond quickly to the rising temperatures, aiming to reduce the impact on people and critical infrastructure. Prolonged heat spells also pose increasing health risks, requiring close attention from emergency services and public health organizations.
As the heatwave intensifies, reports indicate that classrooms in France are reaching alarming temperatures, with some hitting a staggering 54°C. This extreme heat is not only affecting power supply but also posing serious health risks to students.
