Spotify introduces 'AI Persona' tags for fully synthetic acts

Starting mid-September, Spotify will apply a new AI Persona label to performers whose entire public image or identity is generated by artificial intelligence. These tagged artists will be excluded from the algorithmic recommendations new users see, and only listeners who already follow those profiles will be able to play their music. The policy signals how streaming services are responding to the growing presence of AI-created performers.

Creators who operate virtual acts can voluntarily note their project's AI origins through the Spotify for Artists portal. If they omit that information, Spotify's own detection algorithms will step in. According to the company, the first moderation pass will target high-profile accounts that have the largest listener reach.

More clarity in a music world shaped by AI

The AI Persona label will show up across an artist's banner, artist information section, search results, and alongside tracks in playlists. Listeners will be able to tell whether the creator openly disclosed the AI persona or whether the platform flagged it automatically. One instance: the synthetic artist Enlly Blue has nearly 168,700 followers, with a top track exceeding 29 million streams. The total profit from the project has surpassed $145,000 for its creator.

Earlier this year, Spotify also launched a way for creators to credit AI involvement in specific music-making stages, including lyrics and arrangement. These additions reflect the industry's evolving relationship with artificial intelligence, along with Spotify's effort to keep artist-listener interactions transparent.

The AI Persona initiative reinforces the need for transparency in today's music ecosystem, where AI is becoming a standard creative tool. It has the potential to strengthen listener confidence and fuel broader conversations about the ethics of AI in art. As one of the leading platforms in streaming, Spotify is positioning itself to adapt to these changes and meet the expectations of modern audiences.

As Spotify continues to navigate the evolving landscape of AI in music, the introduction of the new AI tools for cover and remix creation highlights its commitment to enhancing creative possibilities while ensuring transparency. This initiative complements the recent AI Persona labels, reflecting the platform's proactive approach to managing the integration of artificial intelligence in the music industry.
