Wiretaps Played in Court for Former Supreme Court Head's Bribery Trial
The High Anti-Corruption Court of Ukraine is hearing the case against Vsevolod Kniaziev, the former Chairman of the Supreme Court. Prosecutors have presented recorded conversations and screenshots of messages between a contact saved as 'Kniaz' (Prince) and lawyer Oleh Horetskyi. Kniaziev is accused of accepting a $2.7 million bribe. According to the investigation, Kniaziev conspired with notary Kyrylo Horbunov and lawyer Oleh Horetskyi.
Kniaziev's defense argues that 'Kniaz' is not their client but another judge from an economic court. The court refused to deem the recordings inadmissible as evidence, and the trial has moved to a closed session to examine material potentially covered by attorney-client privilege. The prosecutor believes a reference to 'support K.' pertains to businessman Ihor Kolomoiskyi, an interpretation the defense disputes.
The prosecutor also contends the conversations may implicate other judges. The prosecution suggests a mention of 'Zh.' could refer to businessman Kostiantyn Zhevago. During one exchange, lawyer Horetskyi stated:
“Part is with me, the rest is off the books.”
Kniaziev allegedly responded: “Okay, I will work on getting it approved. How to proceed further is not clear yet, I will process our people.” Other recorded phrases include “Let it be with you” and “It would be better if you passed it on – storage is complicated.”
On December 12, 2024, the Grand Chamber of the Supreme Court upheld the decision to dismiss Vsevolod Kniaziev from his judicial post.
