Ivan Marchuk's Cases: Copyrights and Legal Proceedings
In the case of artist Ivan Marchuk, concerning the ownership of copyrights to his paintings, the court decided to postpone the hearing until January 16, 2026. A criminal proceeding was opened in mid-December 2025 based on a statement from Marchuk himself. According to the statement, the fraud occurred due to the ownership of copyrights by a group of individuals who acted intentionally in conspiracy by abusing trust.
Collection and Financial Aspects
According to information, Ivan Marchuk's collection consists of over 5,000 paintings. The average price of one canvas ranges from 5,000 to 10,000 US dollars. It is known that the painting 'The Moon Rose Over the Dnieper' was sold for 300,000 dollars at the Goldens auction in Kyiv in the summer of 2024, while another work, 'Garden of Temptation', was sold at a charity auction in 2022 for 120,000 dollars.
Ivan Marchuk, who celebrated his 84th birthday on May 12, 2020, signed a licensing agreement for 100 years for the use of copyrights. Under the terms of the agreement, the artist received 10,000 UAH, which at the time of signing corresponded to approximately 360 US dollars at the 2020 exchange rate.
Marchuk's lawyer noted that reconciliation between the parties is impossible, and the request to postpone the hearing was substantiated by the plaintiff's statement. Taras Yakymets, a representative of Marchuk, confirmed that the Shevchenkivskyi Police Department opened a case regarding the ownership of the artist's rights. The next court session will take place on January 16, 2026.
This case underscores the importance of protecting copyright in art, especially for well-known artists such as Ivan Marchuk. Considering the high prices of his works, the situation may have significant consequences both for the artist himself and for the art market in Ukraine. The postponement of the court hearing also indicates the complexity of the issue and the possibility of prolonged legal battles in the future.
