Greenland's Critical Strategic Value to the United States

Denmark is considering granting the United States sovereignty over specific areas of Greenland for the construction of military bases. This move is part of a long-standing American effort, spanning over 150 years, to establish a permanent foothold on the island. Greenland's location is of paramount strategic importance for Arctic control, as it forms part of the GIUK Gap (Greenland-Iceland-United Kingdom), a maritime chokepoint critical for monitoring the Russian Federation's Northern Fleet. The Arctic region is becoming increasingly contested as climate change opens new sea lanes and access to resources.

The island also holds vast mineral wealth, containing 25 of the 34 critical raw materials identified by the European Commission. The geopolitical situation in the Arctic is a growing concern for the U.S., which is alarmed by deepening cooperation between Russia and China. China's ambition to create a 'Polar Silk Road' could significantly alter the balance of power in the region.

A History of American Ambitions for Greenland

American interest in Greenland has manifested in several key episodes throughout history:

  • In 1867, a U.S. Secretary of State explored purchasing Greenland and Iceland, but Copenhagen rejected the proposal.
  • In 1910, a potential three-way exchange was discussed, where the U.S. would receive Greenland in return for part of the Philippines, and Germany would return Northern Schleswig to Denmark.
  • In 1946, the U.S. secretly offered $100 million in gold for the island, deemed a military necessity during President Harry Truman's administration.
  • In 1955, U.S. military leadership recommended purchasing the island for strategic access.
  • In 2019, then-President Donald Trump publicly expressed a desire to buy Greenland, sparking a diplomatic incident.
  • In 2025, Trump again emphasized the importance of controlling the island, and a bill even appeared in Congress authorizing the president to begin purchase negotiations.
Experts from institutions like CNAS have confirmed that Greenland represents 'the perfect strategic gateway.'

The Atlantic Council notes that these initiatives 'directly contribute to the defense of U.S. territory.'

Denmark's initiative to grant sovereignty reflects the escalating strategic interests of nations in the Arctic, where control over resources and shipping lanes is becoming ever more crucial. Given the intensified cooperation and regional investments by Russia and China, the United States is seeking to strengthen its position to safeguard its security and interests. This situation underscores Greenland's role not merely as a geographic location, but as a pivotal piece in the global geopolitical competition among major world powers.
