One sortie, dozens of downed drones: the U.S. shows off its latest counter-UAS system

Lockheed Martin has unveiled MORFIUS X-Rotor, a reusable interceptor drone designed to disable more than 50 hostile unmanned aircraft in a single combat flight. Instead of conventional warheads, the system relies on a powerful microwave burst that fries the electronics inside enemy drones. The platform has already completed combat testing, and production is being scaled up.

Specs and performance

The X-Rotor uses a cross-wing layout that gives it vertical takeoff and landing capability. It also incorporates patented algorithms and an active radio-frequency seeker to improve its ability to find and engage UAVs. Farnborough airshow attendees got a close look at the aircraft, where it drew considerable attention.

"Counter-drone defense is a major topic worldwide. We brought MORFIUS to Farnborough, and every visitor wanted to know about the technology, its availability, and production speed. This system will spread because we need to defend against individual drones and swarms while protecting vital assets, critical infrastructure, and whatever matters most."

Beyond MORFIUS X-Rotor, the U.S. Army is in talks with AeroVironment about developing the E-HEL high-energy laser. The potential deal could be worth hundreds of millions of dollars and is aimed at folding laser weaponry into the Army's multi-layered air defense architecture.

Lockheed Martin's new interceptor marks a major step forward in counter-air defense technology designed for modern threats. With military conflicts increasingly featuring large numbers of drones, effective ways to neutralize them are becoming essential for security. At the same time, the parallel push for laser systems with AeroVironment underscores Washington's broader strategy to protect airspace and key strategic sites.

As the U.S. enhances its counter-drone capabilities with the MORFIUS X-Rotor, it is also exploring advancements in underwater warfare. The recent testing of the HADALUS underwater strike drone showcases the military's commitment to expanding its operational reach and strike options.
