Statement from the US Secretary of State

During a joint press conference in Budapest with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that the United States is not dictating terms for a peace deal to either Ukraine or Russia. He emphasized that the US is, however, the sole power capable of bringing both parties to the negotiating table. Rubio stressed that Washington does not seek to impose an agreement, declaring:

“We are not trying to force anyone to sign a deal they do not want to sign” – Marco Rubio

This diplomatic push comes as the United States continues to play a central role in efforts to resolve the ongoing war in Eastern Europe. Technical meetings between military representatives were already held last week in the Middle East, with the next round of negotiations scheduled to take place in Geneva this week. US President Donald Trump is investing significant political capital to achieve this peaceful objective. Viktor Orbán also pledged Hungary's continued support for Washington's peace initiatives.

Rubio further noted:

“I don’t mean to offend anyone, but the United Nations could not do this. And there is no other country in Europe that could do it. The United States has successfully gotten both sides to talk” – Marco Rubio

These remarks underscore the critical importance of the US role in the peace process between Ukraine and Russia.

Rubio's statement reflects the strategic position of the United States in international relations, particularly regarding the Ukraine-Russia conflict. It highlights the US role as a mediator in peace talks, which could significantly influence the dynamics of the dialogue between the warring parties. Support from allies like Hungary is seen as potentially strengthening Washington's efforts to achieve stability in the region.
