The USA is negotiating about Greenland: progress is being made, but no decision yet

Сполучені Штати ведуть перемови щодо Гренландії: досягнуті успіхи, але рішення ще не ухвалено.

Negotiations between the USA, Denmark, and Greenland

The USA is negotiating with Denmark and Greenland regarding the future of Greenland. Although representatives from both countries reported progress in these negotiations, no final decision has been reached yet. Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen noted that the situation remains complex:

“We have not come out of the crisis, and there is still no decision.” - Lars Løkke Rasmussen

Greenland's Foreign Minister Vivian Motzfeldt also emphasized that 'we are not yet where we want to be. The path will be long'.

The situation with Greenland and its residents

Copenhagen has emphasized its red line regarding the sovereignty of Greenland, while the USA considers the island as an important territory for national security in the Arctic. Vice President Jay D. Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio have already held talks with delegations from Denmark and Greenland at the White House. It is worth recalling that the former US President Donald Trump did not rule out the possibility of gaining control over the island; however, after a meeting with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte in Davos, the rhetoric from the White House became more reserved.

It should be noted that most residents of Greenland express their concerns about a possible annexation to the USA. According to surveys, about 76% of Greenlanders oppose this scenario. Such sentiments are also supported by a general decline in European residents' attitudes toward the USA, which has reached its lowest point in the last decade, according to YouGov data. Negotiations are ongoing, but their outcome remains uncertain.

Negotiations between the USA, Denmark, and Greenland highlight the complexity of geopolitical relations in the Arctic region, where competition for resources and strategic territories is becoming increasingly relevant. The situation in Greenland is important not only for local residents but also for international politics, which could affect relations between the USA and their European allies, as well as the perception of the USA among European countries. It is important to monitor the developments in this context, as the results of the negotiations could have long-lasting implications for both sides.
