Yuliia Starodubtseva Falls Short at WTA 1000 Madrid Open

Ukraine's Yuliia Starodubtseva was eliminated in the second round of the WTA 1000 tournament in Madrid, losing to Romania's Jacqueline Cristian, the 29th seed, in a marathon three-hour-and-seven-minute match that ended 6:3, 6:7 (5:7), 4:6. This was their third career meeting, and Starodubtseva has now lost all three, with the previous two ending prematurely due to her retirements. The defeat prevented her from advancing to the round of 32.

Starodubtseva entered the main draw as a lucky loser after initially failing to qualify. She managed to upset Moyuka Uchijima in the first round, but could not defend the ranking points she earned last year when she reached the round of 16. Fellow Ukrainian Elina Svitolina also exited the tournament early, losing to Anna Bondar.

Three Ukrainians Keep Title Hopes Alive in Madrid

Despite Starodubtseva's loss, three Ukrainian women remain in the competition:

  • Anhelina Kalinina, who is set to face Marie Bouzková of Czechia;
  • Daria Snigur, who will take on Poland's Iga Swiatek;
  • Marta Kostyuk, who is scheduled to play Yulia Putintseva of Kazakhstan.

Notably, seven Ukrainian players have secured spots in the main draw of Roland Garros, scheduled for May 24 to June 7, 2026. The list includes Elina Svitolina, Marta Kostyuk, Dayana Yastremska, Yuliia Starodubtseva, Oleksandra Oliynykova, Anhelina Kalinina, and Daria Snigur.

Starodubtseva's exit in Madrid highlights the fierce competition at the WTA 1000 level, where every match demands peak performance. Still, the remaining Ukrainian contenders have a chance to showcase their skills on an international stage, building momentum ahead of major upcoming events like Roland Garros, where they can aim to climb the world rankings.

As the competition intensifies in Madrid, it's worth noting that despite Yuliia Starodubtseva's early exit, several other Ukrainian players are still vying for success.
