The Case of Vyacheslav Lavrukhin

Vyacheslav Lavrukhin, the 62-year-old head coach of Ukraine's national artistic gymnastics team, has moved to Belarus and ceased all communication. Stella Zakharova, Vice President of the Gymnastics Federation, confirmed that Lavrukhin has not been in contact with the Ukrainian federation since the new year. A highly decorated coach, Lavrukhin trained Igor Radivilov for over 20 years; Radivilov won a bronze medal at the 2012 Olympics and is a multiple European and World Championship medalist. This incident highlights the pressures on Ukrainian sports professionals since Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022.

Originally displaced from the Donetsk region, Lavrukhin was granted a one-bedroom apartment in Kyiv in 2018. This housing was part of a government program to improve living conditions for medalists and coaches from the 2012 and 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The salary disparity is stark: while Ukraine's Ministry of Youth and Sports pays coaches 20,000 hryvnias, Lavrukhin was reportedly offered 5,000 euros to work in Belarus.

Reactions to the Coach's Actions

The Ukrainian Gymnastics Federation (UFG) lacks direct authority over its coaching staff, complicating the situation. The move has provoked strong condemnation. Stella Zakharova expressed outrage, stating:

"This should never have happened. He should be banned from entering Ukraine for life. It's a despicable act."
Igor Radivilov, Lavrukhin's former athlete, commented, 'It's his decision. For me, it was unexpected.' Fellow gymnast Vladyslav Hera commented that 'to completely abandon your homeland during a war... is a shameful act.'

Lavrukhin is not the only Ukrainian gymnast seeking opportunities abroad. Illia Kovtun has lived and trained in Osijek, Croatia, for over three years and has applied for Croatian citizenship. His coach, Iryna Horbachova (Nadiuk), has also filed for citizenship, a process approved by the Croatian Gymnastics Federation.

Amidst the ongoing war and instability in Ukraine, such decisions by athletes and coaches are generating complex reactions within the sports community. Lavrukhin's disappearance underscores the difficult position of Ukraine's athletic sector during the conflict. The loss of experienced coaches with deep institutional knowledge can hinder the development of sports in the country. Simultaneously, the decisions of other athletes to seek futures abroad point to a lack of stability and support, potentially leading to a further brain drain of talented individuals.
