Ukrainian MP's Marriage Dissolved Amid Treason Case

Шлюб українського народного депутата розірвано на фоні справи про зраду.

Marriage of MP Fedir and Maryna Khrystenko Officially Ended

A Kyiv court has formally dissolved the marriage of Ukrainian Member of Parliament Fedir Khrystenko and his wife, Maryna. Maryna Khrystenko initiated the divorce proceedings, filing her petition in mid-November 2025. Neither party attended the court hearing; Maryna submitted a written statement through her legal representative, while Fedir Khrystenko, though absent, was aware of his wife's intentions.

The couple had been married for nearly 14 years and have a daughter together. The family's international assets have been under scrutiny: in 2022, they used a 173-square-meter apartment in Poland, and in 2023-2024, they declared the rental of a hotel room in the United Arab Emirates. Maryna Khrystenko also owns property in Russia.

Treason Charges Against Fedir Khrystenko

Fedir Khrystenko is facing criminal prosecution on charges of state treason, allegedly committed by prior conspiracy in a group, abusing his influence during martial law. Ukrainian special services returned him from the UAE to Ukraine in early September 2025, where he was formally notified of the suspicion. By the end of 2025, a classified verdict was issued in his case.

Khrystenko left Ukraine on February 14, 2022, reportedly following instructions from Russian contacts he had maintained since autumn 2014. In March 2022, he was allegedly tasked with gathering information on Ukraine's socio-political and international relations. He met with his Russian handler in Turkey in August 2024 and February 2025, where he passed on information.

In granting the divorce, the court ruled that preserving the marriage would be contrary to the interests of both parties.

"The preservation of a marriage is possible on the basis of parity, mutual love and respect, mutual assistance and support—that is, on what constitutes the moral foundation of marriage. Taking into account the statements of the parties, the court considers that the further cohabitation of the spouses and the preservation of the marriage would contradict their interests," the court stated.

The court further emphasized that

"a refusal to dissolve the marriage would constitute coercion into marriage and marital relations, which is inadmissible."
This ruling marks a significant personal development in a case that carries severe legal and political consequences for the MP. The divorce proceeding is a separate civil matter from the ongoing criminal prosecution, highlighting the personal fallout from the serious allegations.

The dissolution of the Khrystenkos' marriage underscores the complex personal and legal situation of the parliamentarian accused of betraying his country. The court's decision not only addresses the personal circumstances of the couple but also occurs against the backdrop of a high-stakes legal process involving grave charges of national security.
