SBU Official Faces Court Over Unexplained Wealth and False Declarations
Ukraine's National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) and Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office (SAPO) have sent a case to court against the former head of the Cyber Security Department at the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU). He is charged with illegal enrichment and filing false declaration information. According to case materials, in December 2023 the official purchased an apartment for UAH 21.6 million that was registered in the name of a family member.
The apartment purchase agreement listed the price as UAH 12.8 million. The family member claimed the money came from work as a private entrepreneur providing legal and consulting services since February 2022. However, investigators say funds flowing into that entrepreneur's accounts originated from a person charged with embezzling money from the state-owned company JSC Ukrzaliznytsia, as well as from businesses controlled by that individual.
The investigation concluded that no real services were provided and that the companies showed signs of being shell entities. Moreover, the lawful source of the UAH 8.8 million used for the apartment could not be confirmed. As a result, the former SBU official's case is now going before a court.
