Sea of Azov: Latest developments

Planet Labs satellite images captured on July 9 show damaged tankers belonging to Russia’s shadow fleet in the Sea of Azov. One tanker, located near the Kerch Strait, is still burning. Another vessel sits roughly 10 kilometers away from the first.

Ukrainian forces strike back

According to Commander Robert Brovdi of the Ukrainian Unmanned Systems Forces, Ukrainian drones struck 14 Russian vessels in the Sea of Azov on the night of July 8–9. The list of damaged targets includes:

  • 12 fuel tankers
  • the tugboat Alfeo
  • one dry cargo ship

Over the past four days, Ukrainian drones have hit a total of 35 Russian vessels, including fuel tankers, dry cargo ships, and specialized craft.

These events highlight the growing operational reach of Ukrainian forces in the region and their ability to strike Russian maritime assets. The destruction of tankers and other ships could significantly disrupt Russian supply logistics and shift the naval balance of power. Such strikes also underscore the increasing effectiveness of Ukrainian drone warfare, with potential long-term implications for the conflict in the area. For an English-speaking audience, this marks a notable escalation in the use of unmanned systems to target economic and military infrastructure at sea.

The recent drone strikes on Russian vessels have prompted a response from Moscow, as the nation has officially lodged a complaint with the International Maritime Organization. This escalation highlights the ongoing tensions in the region and raises questions about the future of maritime operations amid the conflict.
