Antarctica's Pink Trails
By analyzing the color of penguin droppings from orbit, researchers have been able to reconstruct what Adélie penguins are eating. The team matched pink-tinted guano visible in Landsat satellite imagery with dietary information, allowing them to track both feeding habits and population changes across the Antarctic Peninsula. Published in Current Biology, the work draws on 103 fecal samples taken from 16 colonies and satellite data collected between 1984 and 2013. The results show a regional split: Adélie penguins in the western part of Antarctica rely more heavily on krill, while those in the east eat mostly fish.
Krill give penguin guano its vivid pink shade, which makes these dietary patterns visible from space. The colonies are so large that the resulting stain on the landscape can be detected in satellite images. The study found that colonies with krill-heavy diets are more prone to population declines, especially in areas where sea ice has shrunk most dramatically.
What Climate Change Means for the Birds
Because Landsat satellites return to the same spot every eight days, their images also allowed scientists to examine sea-ice conditions and investigate how melting ice is connected to shifts in penguin diets. Some colonies eat more krill during summer than in spring or autumn, but exactly why melting ice alters their food choices remains unclear. This research opens new ways to study Adélie penguin ecology as the Antarctic climate continues to change.
This work is a major step toward understanding how climate change is reshaping the Antarctic marine ecosystem. Less sea ice can have serious consequences for penguins' food supply, which in turn may threaten their numbers. It also demonstrates how tools like satellite observations can track environmental shifts in some of the most remote places on Earth.
