A UOC MP priest detained for organizing illegal border crossing with Romania

Священник УПЦ МП затриманий за спробу незаконного перетвору кордону з Румунією.

Detention of the Priest in Bukovyna

In October 2025, a priest of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate was detained in Bukovyna on suspicion of organizing illegal border crossing from Ukraine to Romania. Together with his accomplice, the priest helped men illegally cross the state border for a significant sum - 13 thousand euros per person. The offenders were caught during the transfer of funds.

The priest, who is currently unnamed, organized a scheme that allowed men to bypass the official procedures for border crossing. His accomplice turned out to be a 42-year-old resident of the village of Banchensky, in the Chernivtsi region. Both detainees are accused of organizing the illegal transportation of persons across the state border of Ukraine under part 3 of article 332 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.

Public Resonance

This event has caused significant resonance in society, as priests are usually associated with moral values and spiritual support. Now, due to their involvement in criminal activities, questions arise regarding the ethics and responsibilities of clergy representatives. The investigation is ongoing, and law enforcement agencies continue to gather evidence for further investigation of this case.

The detention of the priest and his accomplice highlights the seriousness of the problem of illegal migration in Ukraine, which remains relevant, especially in the context of military actions and socio-economic challenges. The situation causes outrage among the public, as the clergy, who should be an example of morality, themselves become participants in criminal activities. Further investigations may affect trust in religious institutions and raise important questions about regulating the activities of clergy.
