Sweden Seizes and Orders Handover of Cargo Vessel Caffa
A Swedish court has ruled that the detention of the bulk carrier Caffa was lawful and officially authorized its transfer to Ukrainian authorities. The Caffa’s History and Interception
The 114-meter-long dry cargo ship is currently docked in the port of Trelleborg. In March 2026, Swedish police and coast guard conducted a special operation off Sweden’s southern coast, intercepting and confiscating the vessel. The Caffa attempted to pose as a vessel sailing under the flag of Guinea, but it was deemed unfit for safe navigation. Investigators say the ship was used to unlawfully transport Ukrainian grain from the port of Sevastopol and later unloaded its cargo in the Syrian port of Tartus.
Ukraine’s Prosecutor General’s Office submitted a request for international legal assistance to Sweden’s Ministry of Justice, demanding a search, document seizure, crew interviews, and the ship’s impoundment. The Caffa was added to Ukraine’s sanctions list in November 2025—several months after it had already been loaded with stolen grain in Sevastopol in July 2025. Of the 11 crew members, the majority are Russian citizens.
Swedish prosecutor Håkan Larsson stated: 'The court clearly confirmed that the seizure of the Caffa was entirely lawful and that it can indeed be handed over to the Ukrainian side.'
