Switzerland extended temporary protection for Ukrainians
Today, October 8, the Federal Council of Switzerland confirmed the extension of temporary S protection for Ukrainian citizens at least until March 4, 2027. At the same time, the new decision introduces a differentiated approach to Ukrainian refugees depending on their region of origin. This was reported by 'Glavkom' with reference to Blue News.
Starting November 1, it will be considered possible to return individuals who arrived from the following regions:
- Volyn;
- Rivnenska;
- Lviv;
- Ternopil;
- Zakarpattia;
- Ivano-Frankivsk;
- Chernivtsi.
Residents from other regions will have separate conditions and criteria for return.
Ukrainians who lose the right to S status under the new rules will be able to apply for asylum in Switzerland. Those who maintain this status will continue to receive state support.
Previously, the President of Poland, Karol Nawrocki, signed a law extending the stay of Ukrainian refugees in the country until March 4, 2026, but tightening the conditions for financial assistance.
The European Union also adopted a recommendation for the gradual ending of temporary protection for Ukrainians. It calls for coordination of member states' actions to ensure the safe return of Ukrainians home and their sustainable reintegration when the security situation allows.
After Switzerland's new decisions regarding temporary protection for Ukrainians arriving in the country, the conditions for refugees from Ukraine at the European level have tightened. Additionally, the region of origin of individuals is taken into account, as well as various return criteria depending on the area from which they arrived.
