Switzerland Steps In With $730,000 for the Lavra
Switzerland is channeling 600,000 Swiss francs (around $730,000) through UNESCO to help protect and restore the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra after a Russian strike damaged the site. The lavra complex is one of Ukraine’s most famous landmarks and a UNESCO World Heritage site. The funding was confirmed by Jacques Gerber, the Swiss government delegate in Ukraine. It comes in response to a Shahed drone attack on June 15, 2026, which struck the altar section of the Dormition Cathedral, part of the monastery’s historic architectural ensemble. The blast also damaged the Tower of John Kushnik, a defensive structure built in the 17th and 18th centuries.
Next Steps for Safeguarding the Monastery Complex
Gerber discussed the Lavra’s future preservation with Ukraine’s Culture Minister Tetiana Berezhna and UNESCO Director-General Khaled El-Enany. Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha welcomed Switzerland’s commitment, saying the support arrives at a crucial moment for the country’s cultural heritage.
“I welcome Switzerland’s decision to provide around $730,000 for the preservation of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra — a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Ukraine’s most significant spiritual and cultural treasures. This support is especially meaningful right now,” Sybiha said.
During the attack, sacred objects were evacuated from the site, including icons, antiminses, and liturgical items. Researchers at the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) assess that the large-scale Russian strike on Ukraine overnight on June 15 had both military and psychological objectives. Sybiha also pointed out that Russia intentionally hit the shrine just two months before the Lavra’s 975th anniversary, underscoring the site’s profound cultural and symbolic importance.
Between July 6 and 8, volunteers organized a working gathering, known as a toloka, on the Lavra grounds to help in its recovery. The initiative reflects the public’s strong commitment to preserving Ukraine’s heritage even amid wartime hardship.
The Swiss contribution highlights the international community’s continued support for Ukraine during the conflict and the urgent need to protect cultural monuments of deep symbolic value. For Ukrainians, the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra is far more than an architectural treasure: it is a cornerstone of national identity, and its preservation remains a priority in the face of armed aggression.
The recent drone attack on the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra has raised significant concerns about the preservation of this historic site. With the damage to the Dormition Cathedral roof affecting nearly 80% of its structure, the urgency for restoration efforts has intensified.
