World Bank Commits $40 Million to Bolster Ukraine's Power Grid

Світовий банк виділяє 40 мільйонів доларів для зміцнення енергетичної інфраструктури України.

World Bank Funding for Critical Infrastructure

The World Bank has approved a $40 million allocation to support the restoration of Ukraine's energy infrastructure. This funding, secured in an agreement between Ukrainian Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal and World Bank Managing Director of Operations Anna Bjerde, is designated for the national energy company Ukrenergo. The money will be used to procure vital equipment, a crucial need as Ukraine's energy system faces immense strain from wartime attacks and technical failures.

Grid Recovery and Business Support Initiatives

On February 2, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced the full restoration of the power grid following a major technical failure on January 31. This recovery is a key step in ensuring stable electricity supply across the nation. Concurrently, the government has launched an energy support package for businesses, which includes:

  • Direct payments of up to 15,000 hryvnias to individual entrepreneurs;
  • Zero-interest loans for purchasing energy equipment.

Furthermore, applications opened on January 30 for the "SvitloDim" (LightHouse) program, which provides autonomous power supply solutions for apartment buildings. These combined efforts aim to help both businesses and the general population adapt to the challenging and unstable energy conditions in Ukraine. The World Bank's financial commitment underscores the critical role of international partners in addressing Ukraine's urgent energy needs during the ongoing conflict.
