Taipei's position on the sanctions regime

The President of Taiwan, Lai Ching-te, confirmed the island's readiness to strengthen its control over the compliance of restrictive measures against Russia. He noted that the authorities are counting on data exchange with Ukraine for more effective counteraction to illegal transit through third countries and the concealment of the ultimate destination of goods. This step is a response to threats associated with possible support for the Russian Federation from other states.

Lai Ching-te emphasized that Taipei intends to tighten monitoring of goods passing through third countries to prevent them from reaching Russia and to support Ukraine. He also expressed condolences to the families of young Taiwanese who died defending Ukraine's freedom, demonstrating the island's solidarity with the Ukrainian people in the context of the military conflict. For Russia, such statements mean potential complications in logistics chains and the need to seek new bypass routes.

Discussion of sanctions at the Davos Forum

Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Volodymyr Zelensky criticized partners for insufficient control over sanctions and stated that critically important components were being supplied to the Russian Federation. According to him, without these parts supplied from China, Europe, the USA, and Taiwan, Russia won't be able to produce missiles. Zelensky called for more decisive actions, stating that everyone who trades in Europe's interests should receive a 'tap on the head'. In response, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban stated that everyone would get what they deserve.

'Everyone who trades in Europe's interests should receive a „tap on the head“.'

Taiwan's statement about tightening control over anti-Russian sanctions highlights the significance of international cooperation in countering aggression and violations of international law. In the context of the protracted Ukrainian conflict, such interaction may become a key factor in preventing illegal supplies of military materials supporting Russia. The expression of condolences from Lai Ching-te to the deceased Taiwanese also reflects the profound emotional and political involvement of the island in events, which may affect its relations with other countries supporting Kyiv.
