Актери Франкового театру презентують виставу, що черпає натхнення з роману, відзначеного премією Гончара.

Stage Production 'Where the Sun Sets'

On May 13, the Ivan Franko National Academic Drama Theater will premiere 'Where the Sun Sets,' a play adapted from the novel of the same name by Ukrainian author Olena Pshenychna. The book, released in 2024 by the Laboratory publishing house, was honored with the Oles Honchar Prize in 2025. The production is directed by People's Artist Taras Zhyrko.

The story centers on 72-year-old Vira Petrivna, a former Ukrainian language teacher who enters a private retirement home after the start of the full-scale invasion. For this adaptation, the novelist crafted a stage version specifically for the Franko Theater. The premiere is scheduled for May 13-14, with all tickets sold out through July.

Cast Involvement and Significance of the Play

The cast includes Yevhen Nishchuk's seven-year-old son, Yevhen Nishchuk Jr. In one cast configuration, the director's wife, Merited Artist of Ukraine Tetiana Oleksenko-Zhyrko, also appears. Additionally, after a serious illness, People's Artist of Ukraine Vasyl Basha returns to the stage, portraying the character Vasylko.

Yevhen Nishchuk, General Director and Artistic Director of the Franko Theater, stated: 'Today, theater is a space where we can honestly address human vulnerability, loneliness, the need for support, and the value of closeness. In wartime, such stories become especially important because they help us retain our capacity for empathy and connection with one another.'

He also emphasized: 'This production brings together different generations of Franko Theater actors: senior masters, young performers, and the middle generation. It's a wonderful ensemble rooted in the Franko tradition, which itself is a family—the creators of this premiere.'

'Where the Sun Sets' stands as a significant cultural work, highlighting the enduring relevance of human emotional experience during difficult times. By involving actors across generations, the theater demonstrates its commitment to preserving traditions and passing knowledge to younger artists. This approach also fosters a community capable of mutual support amid war and social tension.

In addition to the exciting premiere of 'Where the Sun Sets,' the Ivan Franko Theater is also witnessing a remarkable event with the stage debut of Yevhen Nishchuk's young son, who will take on a leading role. This unique moment highlights the theater's commitment to nurturing new talent and bridging generations within the performing arts, further enriching the cultural landscape during these challenging times.
