Imaging the Heart of the Milky Way Galaxy
On March 23–24, 2025, the European Space Agency’s Euclid space telescope spent 26 hours photographing the center of the Milky Way. The resulting image, a mosaic composed of nine separate frames, contains over 60 million stars. Each individual frame covers an area larger than the full Moon. The primary scientific goal of this observation is to detect exoplanets using the gravitational microlensing technique.
Data and Its Significance
While Euclid typically focuses on a cosmological survey aimed at studying dark energy and dark matter, this particular dataset will serve as a foundational map for NASA’s future Roman space telescope, which will also observe this region.
