Tatyana Montyan's Detention in Moscow

On October 3, 2025, Tatyana Montyan reported being forcibly detained in Moscow, stating that physical force was used during the incident. This force reportedly injured her shoulder joint, which had recently undergone surgery. The detention occurred shortly after she was discharged from a rehabilitation clinic. According to Montyan, security forces took her to an apartment for a search, during which electronics, bank cards, and SIM cards were seized. She was then taken to a local police department.

Tatyana Montyan, a former Ukrainian lawyer and a vocal supporter of Russia, also stated that the pursuit by Russian law enforcement is linked to comments she made during an online stream in 2022. She has been added to the Russian Federal Financial Monitoring Service's lists of extremists and terrorists. Furthermore, in February 2023, the Office of the Prosecutor General of Ukraine announced suspicions against her under four articles of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. In September 2024, the Qualification and Disciplinary Commission of the Bar of the Zhytomyr Region terminated her right to practice law.

Legal Consequences and Public Reaction

As a result of the detention, Tatyana Montyan required a second surgical intervention, which is scheduled for the end of October 2025. The articles of the Ukrainian Criminal Code under which she is suspected include:

  • Part 3 of Article 109
  • Parts 1, 2 of Article 110
  • Part 1 of Article 111-1
  • Part 3 of Article 436-2

The situation surrounding Montyan continues to generate significant public and media attention.

This incident highlights the escalating tensions between Russia and Ukraine, particularly regarding the treatment of individuals who express views contrary to the official Kremlin position.

The forceful detention of Tatyana Montyan, which involved physical violence, has drawn condemnation from human rights advocates. This case may fuel further debate on freedom of speech and human rights in Russia. It also sharpens questions about the legal risks for Ukrainian citizens on Russian territory who may face prosecution. Her case illustrates the complex and perilous situation for pro-Russian figures from Ukraine who have relocated there since the war began.
