The fifth day of the World Universiade in Germany was successful for Ukraine, which received its eighth medal in these competitions. Andrey Garbar, a representative of the national taekwondo team, won a bronze medal.
“At the last second, I tried to make a turning kick that would give me five points. But, as you saw, I was a few centimeters short of gathering myself and fighting in the third round for a place in the finals,” Garbar said.
Now our team has already secured seven medals, including a second place won by taekwondo athlete Maxim Manenko in the under 58 kg category. Another bronze medal was added by Kirill Gurnov in the under 80 kg category.
Winners' reviews
Maxim Manenko confessed that he was inspired by the victory of Alexander Usyk: “Don't push the horses. The goal was to show that I am the best in my weight category at this tournament. This is a preparatory step for the World Championship, which will take place in two months”.
Kirill Gurnov, bronze medalist in taekwondo, noted: “Every athlete hopes for gold and strives to achieve it, but a medal at such a high-level championship is also a significant achievement”.
Anna Maksimenko, who shared 5th place in the women's foil, believes that our team could have competed for prize positions, but was unable to outperform the Korean team.
The Ukrainian team at the World Universiade continues to delight with its results, which indicates the high level of preparation of our athletes. Every medal at such a tournament is a great achievement and confirmation of the team's high sporting potential.
