Trump and Xi Jinping Set to Meet

U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping are scheduled to meet in Beijing as both nations brace for an economic standoff. This visit, the first of its kind in nine years, will see Trump propose the creation of a bilateral investment and trade council. The U.S. delegation includes 16 executives from top American companies, though Cisco CEO Chuck Robbins will not be joining. The leaders of the world’s two largest economies will meet in person for the first time in six months, with the visit planned across Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.

Economic Challenges

China is currently deploying legal measures as a systematic response to international pressure. For instance, Beijing blocked Meta’s acquisition of an AI startup and introduced penalties for foreign firms that comply with Western efforts to move production out of China. In April, Chinese regulators were given the authority to investigate corporate records, question employees, and restrict company executives from leaving the country. As part of these actions, China launched an investigation into PVH Corp., the owner of Calvin Klein and Tommy Hilfiger, for refusing to use Xinjiang cotton. PVH has been placed on an unreliable entities list.

Meanwhile, the U.S. has raised tariffs to 145% and imposed fees on Chinese vessels. Washington is also limiting China’s access to semiconductors, chemicals, and equipment, while China restricts the flow of rare earth elements and uses subsidies to bolster its own manufacturing, aiming to offset a real estate market crisis. Beijing has officially instructed its companies to ignore U.S. sanctions, signaling an escalation in tensions between the two nations.

As 'People's Daily' notes, this represents a 'practical application of legal weaponry.'

The situation between the U.S. and China remains tense, and the Trump-Xi meeting could be a crucial step in efforts to reestablish dialogue.

This meeting could prove critical for both countries as economic sanctions and confrontations intensify. A successful dialogue might ease tensions and open new avenues for cooperation. Conversely, an unfavorable outcome could worsen relations, with negative repercussions for the global economy.
