U.S. Military Options Against Iran Presented

U.S. Central Command chief General Brad Cooper has briefed President Donald Trump on potential military options against Iran. This development follows recent nuclear negotiations between the U.S. and Iran in Geneva, which concluded without an agreement. The talks, mediated by Oman, failed to settle key terms for a future deal, though both sides agreed to continue discussions after internal consultations. The failure of these talks has heightened regional tensions and raised the specter of military confrontation.

Several Republican lawmakers and Trump administration officials have suggested that Israel, rather than the U.S., should initiate strikes against Iran, with the possibility of a joint U.S.-Israeli operation also under consideration. Among the military options being discussed are:

  • A limited strike targeting ballistic missile launchers and nuclear facilities;
  • A large-scale operation involving strikes against a broad range of targets over an extended period.

The American side insisted on reducing Iran's core uranium enrichment capabilities and transferring its stockpiles abroad. Tehran rejected these demands, declaring the complete dismantling of its nuclear program, the elimination of facilities, and the imposition of permanent restrictions as unacceptable. The negotiations involved representatives from both countries, facilitated by international partners.

Next Steps in the Negotiations

The next steps will involve consultations in Washington and Tehran. Following this, nuclear energy experts are scheduled to hold discussions in Vienna next week. As noted by one of the negotiators, Abbas Araghchi,

"The nuclear talks in Geneva led to mutual understanding on some issues but left gaps on others."

The situation surrounding Iran's nuclear program remains tense, with the lack of a deal increasing the risk of military action. The consideration of potential military options by the U.S. and Israel appears to be part of a strategy to increase pressure on Tehran to reach a compromise. Continuing negotiations represent an attempt to avoid conflict escalation, yet significant uncertainty remains regarding their outcome and the potential next steps from either side.
