Trump convinced Orban to lift objections to Ukraine's EU membership

U.S. President Donald Trump persuaded Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, who opposed Ukraine's accession to the European Union, to lift his objections on this issue.

According to 'Hvylia', Politico reports this citing a European diplomat. The publication's source noted that this 'influenced the dynamics of events.' Additionally, two diplomats expressed hope that the deadlock surrounding Ukraine's accession may be overcome in the coming months, considering the pressure on Budapest.

It is worth reminding that Bloomberg, citing sources, reported: after a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and European leaders at the White House last week, Trump called Orban to discuss why Hungary is blocking negotiations for Kyiv's EU accession.

However, it was not reported how the Hungarian Prime Minister reacted at that time. Earlier, he wrote on social media X that Ukraine's EU membership is a 'blank check for endless war.' It should be noted that the EU officially began negotiations with Ukraine on accession in June 2024. At the same time, according to Euractiv, after a year they reached a deadlock due to Orban's position. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen assessed that Ukraine could likely become an EU member by 2030, although 'the process will not be easy.'

It was previously reported that Poland would block Ukraine's accession to the EU.

After Trump's phone conversation with Orban and the support from Europe, the possibility of Ukraine's EU membership is being viewed in a more optimistic light, although the process remains complicated due to some resistance from individual countries.
