Marco Rubio’s visit to China

Despite being personally sanctioned by Beijing, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has traveled to the Chinese capital alongside President Donald Trump. This marks Rubio’s first trip to China, where he will join Trump in talks aimed at establishing a bilateral investment and trade council. The US delegation also includes 16 executives from leading American corporations.

Transliteration shifts and political tensions

China has altered how it transliterates Marco Rubio’s name. Starting in January 2025, the Chinese government and state media began using a different character for his surname. This change comes against the backdrop of sanctions imposed on Rubio for actions taken during his time as a US senator, particularly his advocacy for human rights in China. Two diplomats confirmed that the transliteration was updated because the previous version was linked to his entry ban.

On Tuesday, Chinese embassy spokesperson Liu Pengyu stated that Beijing would not block Rubio over his past conduct.

“The sanctions target Mr. Rubio’s words and deeds when he was a US senator concerning China,” he said.
President Trump, who himself has two Chinese names, plans to hold an extended discussion with Chinese leader Xi Jinping about the war in Iran after arriving in Beijing.

It is worth noting that Cisco CEO Chuck Robbins will not be joining this trip. Rubio and Trump’s visit to China underscores the significance of US-China bilateral relations and the effort to address key international political and economic issues.

This visit, despite Rubio’s personal sanctions, reflects Washington’s desire to maintain dialogue with Beijing, especially on critical economic and political matters. The change in the transliteration of Rubio’s name also points to ongoing political friction between the two nations, yet simultaneously shows China’s willingness to engage under certain conditions. Discussions on major topics like the Iran war could have far-reaching implications for global politics and the world economy.

As tensions between the US and China continue to shape diplomatic relations, it's important to note that this visit comes after a significant hiatus in official engagements.
