Trump's CNN Interview on Cuba and Iran

In an interview with CNN, U.S. President Donald Trump outlined aggressive new foreign policy stances towards Cuba and Iran. He asserted that the Cuban government would soon collapse and revealed his administration's plan to appoint Senator Marco Rubio as a governor or overseer for the island nation, a move Rubio has reportedly accepted pending a resolution of the Cuba issue. This represents a significant shift from decades of U.S. policy, which has oscillated between engagement and embargo.

Trump emphasized that after dealing with Iran, Cuba is the next priority for his administration. The day before the interview, he stated at the White House that the return of Cuban-Americans to their homeland was only a matter of time.

“Cuba, by the way, will fall soon, with no relation, but Cuba will fall too. They want to make a deal so badly,” Trump noted.
He further commented on the plans for Rubio, saying:
“They want to make a deal, so I'm going to put Marco (Rubio) over there, and we'll see how that works. We're really focused on that right now. We have a lot of time, but Cuba is ready—after 50 years.”

A Hardened Stance on Iran

Separately, Trump announced a fundamental change in approach towards Iran. The White House is no longer considering diplomatic compromises or a phased reconciliation with Tehran. Washington has officially shifted to a language of ultimatums, demanding Iran's complete capitulation. These statements signal a substantial hardening of the U.S. position regarding both nations.

President Trump's declarations concerning Cuba and Iran reflect a new level of resolve in U.S. foreign policy. By highlighting the intent to appoint Marco Rubio to a governing role in Cuba, Trump signals a potential major expansion of direct American influence in the region. Simultaneously, the altered strategy on Iran suggests a move towards escalation, which could have serious repercussions for international relations and stability in the Middle East. These developments warrant close observation, as their impact may extend far beyond the immediate countries involved.
