Anthropic and the Pentagon Clash Over AI Ethics

US President Donald Trump has announced that the company Anthropic will be added to a government blacklist. This decision follows the company's refusal to lift ethical restrictions on its Claude artificial intelligence model for military applications. As a result, the Pentagon will terminate its contract with Anthropic, valued at up to $200 million, and a six-month transition period will be established to find alternative solutions. This move highlights the growing tension between Silicon Valley's ethical AI principles and national security priorities.

The conflict stems from national security concerns. The Pentagon demanded the removal of restrictions related to mass domestic surveillance and the development of autonomous weapons. US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth set a deadline for an agreement, but a deal could not be reached. In a post on his Truth Social platform, President Trump stated:

“The United States of America will never allow a radical left, woke company to dictate how our great military fights and wins wars! That decision belongs to your Commander-in-Chief—Donald Trump.”

Consequences for Anthropic

Consequently, Anthropic will be designated a supply chain risk, and government contractors like Palantir will be forced to stop using Claude in their work for federal agencies. Anthropic's CEO, Dario Amodei, rejected the Pentagon's proposal, stating he 'cannot in good conscience agree to their demands.'

Claude is currently the only AI model authorized for use in the military's classified systems and was previously used in the operation to capture Nicolás Maduro. Meanwhile, negotiations to utilize other models, such as Google's Gemini and OpenAI's ChatGPT, have accelerated. Elon Musk and his company xAI have also signed an agreement to grant its Grok model access to secret systems. These developments signal a shift in the approach to deploying artificial intelligence for government and military purposes, potentially reshaping the defense tech industry.

This situation underscores the critical importance of ethical standards in AI development, especially concerning military applications. Anthropic's refusal to comply with the Pentagon's demands may alter the landscape of collaboration between tech firms and the government, while opening the door for other market players. Given the intensified negotiations with alternative models, this could indicate forthcoming changes in US strategy for integrating AI into military operations.
