US interest in Greenland

US President Donald Trump has once again shown interest in purchasing Greenland, appointing Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry as a special envoy for this matter. The intention of the US to take control of Greenland has raised concerns both in Denmark and among the island's inhabitants, as it infringes on their right to self-determination.

Trump stated that Greenland is needed by the US for national security, emphasizing that the issue does not concern minerals, as

we have more oil than any other country in the world
. He also noted that the situation in the region is complicated by the presence of Russian and Chinese ships, making Greenland strategically important for the United States. In his comments, Trump stressed the importance of the island, describing it as
a big deal
.

However, the vast majority of Greenland's population does not support the idea of becoming the '51st state' of the US. Jeff Landry reported that the Trump administration intends to start negotiations with the residents of Greenland regarding the best path for the island's development. These plans have raised concerns in Denmark, where a local intelligence agency called the US policy a potential threat to security.

The right to self-determination

Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen emphasized that the right of the Greenlandic population to self-determination must be recognized and respected. Thus, the situation regarding the possible US control over Greenland remains tense, given the opposing positions between the American administration and the local inhabitants.

This situation underscores the complexity of international relations and the importance of considering the opinions of local populations in matters affecting their territory and future. Greenland, as an autonomous territory of Denmark, has its own characteristics, thus attempts by the US to gain control over it may provoke not only political but also social consequences. Continuing dialogue between the US, Denmark, and the Greenlandic population will be critically important for ensuring stability in the region.
