A Bizarre and Unfortunate Incident

During preparations for the Rome tournament, Iga Swiatek’s coach, 58-year-old Spaniard Francisco Roig, suffered a serious injury—a ruptured Achilles tendon. The incident occurred as a result of a €100 bet, when Roig hurt his right leg while attempting a split-step move. Swiatek, who was leading 5-4 and held a match point at the time, could only watch as her mentor got hurt.

Roig underwent surgery on his Achilles tendon in Warsaw on Tuesday, after which he returned to Rome to support Swiatek at the Italian Open. Despite the injury, the coach missed only one training session. Currently, Roig is moving around on crutches, with his right leg immobilized in a cast.

The Coach’s Role in Competition

Iga Swiatek, currently ranked world No. 4, expressed her gratitude to her coach, noting that she deeply values such a gesture from her mentor, as she understands how difficult it is for him to be on the court and offer advice from the bench in this condition. Notably, Roig has previously worked with famous tennis players such as Rafael Nadal and Emma Raducanu.

In her first match at the Italian Open, Iga Swiatek defeated Katie McNally, showcasing high skill and determination. Despite her coach’s injury, the team remains focused on achieving strong results at the tournament.

This incident underscores the crucial role a coach plays in sports competitions, even under challenging circumstances. Roig’s injury not only affected his physical condition but also added an emotional burden to Swiatek, who must continue competing at a high level. It will be important to see how the team adapts to these new challenges and what results they achieve at the tournament given these circumstances.
