Kyiv Railway Records Third Fatality Within a Week

Третій трагічний випадок на київській залізниці за останні дні.

Tragedy on the Tracks

A passenger train traveling from Kyiv to Chełm, Poland, struck and killed a 70-year-old woman after she suddenly stepped onto the tracks near the Vasylkiv-Hlevakha station. The victim died at the scene from her injuries. A railway duty officer reported the incident to the police.

Investigators from the Fastiv Police Department have launched a pre-trial investigation under Part 3 of Article 276 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, which covers violations of railway traffic safety or operational rules. This incident follows two other recent fatal occurrences on Kyiv's railway network:

  • Several days ago, in the capital's Svyatoshyn district, a person fell onto the tracks, and rescuers later found the lifeless body of a man beneath a train car.
  • Furthermore, on April 1st, another tragedy occurred in the Svyatoshyn district where a 12-year-old child died under the wheels of a commuter train. The boy, who was riding between the train cars while it was moving, fell onto the track and was struck. Two other minors who were on the roof of the same car at the time were not injured.

These consecutive incidents underscore a critical safety issue on the capital's rail infrastructure. Ukraine's railway system is a vital transport link, especially during the ongoing war, making safety paramount. The situation demands urgent attention from relevant authorities to prevent future tragedies. It is crucial to enhance passenger awareness of safety rules and implement measures to ensure compliance, particularly in high-risk areas along the railway lines.

The recent surge in tragic incidents on Kyiv's railway network highlights an alarming trend that cannot be ignored. Just ten days prior, a similar situation unfolded in the Sviatoshyn district, where two fatalities raised serious concerns about safety protocols in the area.
