Three-Way Talks Held in Abu Dhabi

A new round of three-way diplomatic talks involving the United States, Ukraine, and Russia concluded in Abu Dhabi on January 24, marking a significant step toward potential high-level negotiations. This two-day meeting was the first in a long time to include both diplomats and senior military officials from all three nations, focusing on parameters for a possible end to the war. The discussions represent a crucial international effort to find a diplomatic off-ramp for the ongoing conflict.

U.S. Special Representative Steve Witkoff confirmed plans for a follow-up round of these trilateral negotiations scheduled for February 1. Following the initial meeting, military representatives identified a list of technical issues for further discussion. Should the Abu Dhabi talks yield progress, the dialogue could potentially be continued in Moscow or Kyiv.

The Stakes of the Negotiations

According to Axios, citing a U.S. official, these lower-level meetings are seen as a necessary precursor to any potential leaders' summit.

"We believe these meetings need to happen before a leaders' meeting. We don't think it's far off. If we continue moving on the current path, we will get there,"
the publication's source stated. The trilateral format is viewed as a vital stage in exploring pathways to end the conflict.

These negotiations underscore the international community's, and particularly Washington's, efforts to facilitate a peaceful resolution between Ukraine and Russia. They address key issues that could form the basis for future higher-level talks. Progress here could significantly impact the regional situation and open new possibilities for a diplomatic settlement.
