Geneva Negotiations Commence

The first round of three-party talks involving Ukraine, the United States, and the Russian Federation has concluded in Geneva. These discussions, held against a backdrop of deep-seated disagreements, saw territorial sovereignty emerge as the primary obstacle to progress. While the political and military working groups have finished their sessions, the involved parties showed little willingness to alter their established positions.

Moscow formally demanded the official cession of territories, while U.S. President Donald Trump urged Kyiv to make swift decisions. Expectations for the next round of talks, scheduled for February 18, remain low, with no rapid breakthroughs anticipated. A change in the leadership of the Russian delegation could further complicate the upcoming negotiations.

Meetings and Next Steps

Ukraine's Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council, Rustem Umerov, held meetings with representatives from several nations to discuss the outcomes of today's round. Umerov stated:

'We discussed the results of today's negotiation round and synchronized our approaches for the next steps. Maintaining a shared vision and coordinated actions between Ukraine, the U.S., and Europe is crucial. There is an understanding of our shared responsibility for the outcome. The work continues.' — Rustem Umerov

Therefore, while the dialogue proceeds, resolving the territorial dispute continues to be the main barrier to reaching a consensus. These talks represent a critical phase in addressing a conflict that has persisted for several years. Despite the lack of immediate progress in this initial round, continued discussion and coordination among partners could prove vital for future peace efforts. The upcoming session on February 18 may serve as a pivotal moment for determining the future direction of cooperation between the sides.
