Travel agent Iryna has identified one of Albania's biggest deceptions: the striking contrast between promotional images of turquoise waters and the actual state of many beaches. She points out that the most picturesque beaches featured in advertising are mostly located along the Ionian Sea, in destinations like Dhermi, Himara, Saranda, and Ksamil. In contrast, Durres, situated on the Adriatic Sea, offers a completely different experience—a wide sandy shoreline with solid infrastructure.
The distance from Tirana Airport to the most appealing beaches is considerable. Getting to Vlora takes 2 to 2.5 hours by road, Dhermi around 3 hours, Himara 3.5 to 4 hours, and Ksamil 4 to 5 hours. Despite promises, the airport in Vlora has yet to open, leaving all travelers to fly into Tirana. For those planning a trip to Saranda or Ksamil, a more convenient route is via the Greek island of Corfu, where a ferry to Saranda takes just 30 to 40 minutes.
Price Shocks and Common Mistakes
Albania sees a massive influx of tourists in July and August, which drives up prices. Iryna notes that "in Ksamil during August, renting two sunbeds with an umbrella can cost 30 to 40 euros or more," a far cry from the cheap reputation the country enjoyed 5 to 7 years ago when it first emerged as a vacation hotspot. "When people tell me Albania is cheap, I always ask for details," the travel agent says.
The most common mistake tourists make is choosing Albania based solely on pictures. "The right approach is to pick your resort carefully and know exactly where you're going and what you want," Iryna concludes. This country may not suit everyone, so it's crucial to pay attention to details that can shape your overall vacation experience.
