Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk Voices Strong Criticism
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has sharply criticized the failure to invite Poland to the June 7 E3 summit in London, which brought together leaders from the United Kingdom, France, Germany, and Ukraine. In response, Tusk discussed the matter by phone with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and also spoke with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who likewise opposes the E3 format. This situation highlights growing friction within Europe over which nations get a seat at the table for key security talks.
Tusk made it clear that Poland will not be bound by any agreements reached without its involvement, stating:
'From Poland's perspective, we will not respect any agreements in which Poland does not participate—they will not be binding for us.'
He argued that Poland is an 'absolutely essential player for any serious discussions regarding the future of Ukraine and the region.' Tusk also revealed that a potential five-party meeting, including Poland and Italy, could take place in the coming days. He noted that the E3 format has sparked resentment among several European nations:
- 'When there is a trio, we get angry—and the Italians are angry too.'
He further pointed out the challenges of reaching swift decisions within the standard 27-member European Union framework, which requires unanimous consensus.
Tusk also stressed the critical need to support Ukraine in its conflict with Russia, emphasizing:
'It must be absolutely clear that no one in Europe will act as an arbiter between Russia and Ukraine. We stand with Ukraine in this war. Ukraine cannot lose this war, and Russia cannot win it.'
It is worth recalling that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky held talks in London with the leaders of the United Kingdom, France, and Germany, thanking UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.
Tusk's frustration over Poland's exclusion from the E3 meeting underscores Warsaw's pivotal role in European politics, particularly regarding support for Ukraine amid its military conflict with Russia. This episode reflects escalating tensions among European countries over the formats for cooperation and decision-making on regional security issues.
The ongoing tensions surrounding Poland's exclusion from key discussions are further complicated by Tusk's recent remarks regarding Ukraine's role in the region.
