Changes in Financial Support for Refugees from Ukraine in Europe
In 2026, several countries in Europe will reduce payments and change their attitude towards refugees from Ukraine. Since 2022, the conditions for residence and financial support for Ukrainians in Europe have significantly changed. This concerns, in particular, countries such as the Czech Republic, Hungary, Spain, Norway, and Slovakia.
Overview of Changes in European Countries
- Czech Republic: From 2023, the number of recipients of assistance began to be limited. From September 1, 2024, the period of residence in humanitarian housing will be reduced from five to three months. In 2025, adult Ukrainians will be able to receive 200 euros, while children will receive 143 euros. However, in the case of unemployment for more than 150 days, the amount of assistance will decrease to 129 euros.
- Hungary: Stricter temporary protection criteria for Ukrainian refugees will be introduced in the summer of 2024.
- Spain: The situation has also changed: special payments for Ukrainians were canceled in 2023, which affected financial support for refugees.
- Slovakia: From March 1, 2025, new limits on staying in shelters will be introduced - 60 days, and payments for living expenses will be provided only during the first two months.
According to these changes, Ukrainians residing in Europe may face new challenges regarding financial support and living conditions. These measures are driven by the need to adapt to the new conditions observed in the region and may significantly impact the lives of thousands of refugees from Ukraine.
The reduction of financial support and changes in the conditions of refugees may lead to a deterioration of their situation in European countries. This may affect their ability to integrate into new societies, as the reduction of assistance complicates the search for work and housing.
It is important for organizations and states supporting refugees to adapt their programs to the new challenges, ensuring proper assistance and support for Ukrainians during this difficult time.
