The Marvel Chestnut of Boyarka
In the town of Boyarka, located in the Kyiv region, there is a remarkable chestnut tree that locals call the "miracle chestnut." Its most distinctive trait: each year, only half of the tree blossoms, and the blooming side alternates from season to season. This unusual phenomenon has turned the tree into a fresh tourist draw, attracting visitors from both Boyarka and other cities.
The local government has asked the community to help uncover and preserve the tree's history. Historians and officials are actively searching for information about when and who planted the chestnut, as its past may be just as fascinating as its extraordinary blooming pattern.
Other Notable Plants in Kyiv
Beyond the miracle chestnut, Kyiv boasts several other intriguing botanical landmarks:
- On the capital's main thoroughfare, Khreshchatyk Street, a lilac bush has flowered. According to Kyiv residents, the bush is about 50 years old and is located at 28/2 Khreshchatyk Street.
- Late last year, the Kyiv City Council declared an ancient tree—the Mykola Pymonenko Oak—a botanical natural monument of local significance. This oak, situated at 12/7 Serhii Husovskyi Street in the Pechersk district of Kyiv, is over 300 years old.
'The oak is also famous for being featured in Mykola Pymonenko's 1904 painting "Leaving Church on Maundy Thursday."'
In this way, Boyarka and Kyiv offer not only historical landmarks but also natural sites that capture the attention of tourists and locals alike. Reconstructing the miracle chestnut's history and preserving these botanical monuments could be key steps in safeguarding the region's natural heritage. This underscores the importance of environmental protection and supports the growth of ecotourism—a sector with the potential to appeal to people across Ukraine and beyond.
