'Flame of Hope' Memorial in Bucha
A memorial marker called 'Flame of Hope' has been erected in Bucha to honor those who are prisoners of war or have gone missing. It stands at the intersection of Kyievo-Myrotska Street and Nove Shose Highway. This initiative seeks to keep alive the memory of individuals who have not yet come home amid the ongoing war.
Prisoner Exchange
On June 26, Ukraine carried out a prisoner exchange with Russia, bringing back 160 Ukrainian service members and 7 civilians. Among the released military personnel were members of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the State Special Transport Service, the National Guard, and the State Border Guard Service.

These prisoners of war had been in Russian captivity since 2022, having participated in the defense of Mariupol and the Azovstal steel plant, as well as carrying out combat missions in the Donetsk, Luhansk, Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhia, Kyiv, Chernihiv, and Sumy regions.
The civilians who were also freed had been held by Russia since 2022 after the occupation of territories. They include residents of Mariupol, the Bucha district in the Kyiv region, as well as the Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhia, and Luhansk regions.
“For our city, this marker carries a deeply personal and painful meaning. Bucha knows how quickly war can sever ties with loved ones and leave people in uncertainty. This flame here is about our primary duty: we must not remain silent about those who have not yet returned home.”
