Recently, an increase in cases of listeriosis caused by the bacteria Listeria has been recorded in Europe. In 2024, over 3,000 cases of this dangerous infection were reported, leading to an increase in hospitalizations and mortality. This information was disseminated by the euronews.com agency, citing 'Glavkom'.
According to data from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control and the European Food Safety Authority, the reasons for the increase in listeriosis cases may be changes in diet and an aging population. Certain products, particularly fermented sausages, are considered sources of increased risk of infection. There is also a noted increase in cases of salmonellosis, with eggs remaining the main source.
The report showed that up to 3% of ready-to-eat products may be contaminated with Listeria bacteria above EU standards, especially concerning fermented sausages. Care should be taken when selecting products, as this bacteria can lead to serious illnesses, ECDC warns.
As a result, an increase in listeriosis cases is being observed in Europe, which may be linked to changes in diet and the quality of food products. It is important to be vigilant and choose safe products to protect one’s health.
