Kazakhstani Opposition Activist Detained
Authorities in Kazakhstan have detained opposition activist Marat Zhanuzakov after he shared a photo showing an anti-Putin poster alongside Ukrainian national symbols. The image, which displayed flags of both Kazakhstan and Ukraine, prompted law enforcement to take action. Following questioning, Zhanuzakov was released and sent home, but police demanded that he delete the post. As of the time of publication, the photograph remained visible on his Facebook page.
This is not the first time Zhanuzakov has drawn scrutiny from security forces. During Russian President Vladimir Putin’s previous visit to Astana in November 2024, the activist and his associates were fined under petty hooliganism charges. Notably, Putin’s trip to Kazakhstan took place from May 27 to 29, and he was greeted at Astana’s airport by Kazakh leader Kassym-Jomart Tokayev. As the motorcade moved through the city, specialized military vehicles were observed, and Putin’s limousine was surrounded by 14 motorcycles and roughly two dozen cars.
Zhanuzakov’s Statements
On his poster, Zhanuzakov wrote:
“Hey, scum! Get the hell out of Kazakhstan! Glory to Ukraine!”After his detention, he remarked:
“Thanks everyone for your support. The police asked me to delete the post. I said: I’ll think about it.”In November 2024, the activist similarly expressed himself, stating: “Your Excellency, get the f*** out of Kazakhstan!” These actions underscore the tension between opposition sentiments in Kazakhstan and the country’s political climate, particularly during visits by high-ranking Russian officials.
Zhanuzakov’s arrest highlights an increasingly repressive approach toward opposition activists in Kazakhstan, likely driven by pressure from Russia and the Kazakh government’s desire to maintain stable relations with its neighbor. Visits by Russian dignitaries are accompanied by tighter control over protest activity, reflecting the complex political situation in the country.
