In Kyiv, a discussion is ongoing about the new increase in public transport fares. While the city authorities are preparing a tariff of 30 UAH per ride, the public organization 'Passengers of Kyiv' has proposed an alternative model with time-based tickets and free transfers.
What new payment system is being proposed in Kyiv
The 'Passengers of Kyiv' organization suggests transitioning to a European model where the passenger pays not for each individual trip, but for the time of using the transport.
According to the proposal, the tariffs could be as follows:
-
30 UAH — ticket for 90 minutes;
-
80 UAH — daily ticket;
-
1000 UAH — monthly pass.
The main advantage of the system is the possibility of transferring between bus, tram, or metro without additional payment.
Why they want to change the payment model in Kyiv
The public organization believes that this system will encourage Kyiv residents to actively purchase passes. Currently, only about 1% of passengers use them, while in European capitals, this figure reaches 75-80%.
They also claim that the new model could increase revenues for transport companies and save the city budget up to 2.5 billion UAH annually.
At the same time, Kyiv city authorities plan to increase the basic fare to 30 UAH starting from July 15. The final decision will be made after consultations with the public.
