Kyiv Launches Major Overhaul of Lobanovskyi Avenue with Barrier-Free Sidewalks

У Києві розпочали масштабну реконструкцію проспекту Лобановського з доступними тротуарами.

Comprehensive Renovation of Valeriy Lobanovskyi Avenue

A large-scale renovation has begun on Valeriy Lobanovskyi Avenue in Kyiv's Solomianskyi District. The project incorporates accessibility standards, with temporary traffic restrictions already in place on certain sections. The work covers the even-numbered side of the avenue from Maksym Kryvonis Street to Andrii Holovko Street, and the initial phase of traffic limitations is expected to last until approximately May 29.

The plan focuses on upgrading the stretch from Volodymyr Brozhko Street to Sevastopol Square, spanning nearly 3 kilometers in total. Key tasks include:

  • removing the old asphalt concrete surface;
  • installing a new two-layer asphalt concrete pavement;
  • laying a stormwater drainage system;
  • setting up outdoor lighting.

Additionally, sidewalks will be renewed with the construction of bike lanes, and both underground and above-ground pedestrian crossings will be repaired. Separate left-turn lanes for vehicles will be created, and traffic light systems will be upgraded. At crosswalks, curbs will be lowered and tactile navigation installed, making it easier for people with disabilities to get around.

Infrastructure Impact of the Renovation

Valeriy Lobanovskyi Avenue forms part of the Small Ring Road, directly linking Sevastopol Square and Demiivska Square. The last major repair on this avenue took place over 20 years ago. It is worth noting that until May 9, from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM, traffic will be partially restricted on Naberezhne Highway in the Pecherskyi District, where a section from the Metro Bridge to the Paton Bridge interchange is being repaired in both directions. Across Ukraine, 203 road crews—totaling about 2,000 workers—are active daily. Major work on international highways was completed on May 1.

The overhaul of Valeriy Lobanovskyi Avenue aims not only to enhance road infrastructure but also to create comfortable conditions for all road users, including pedestrians and people with disabilities.

As a result, this project could mark a significant step forward in developing a barrier-free environment in the capital. Such renovations are part of a nationwide program to upgrade road infrastructure in Ukraine, focused on improving road quality and reducing accident rates.

As the renovation of Valeriy Lobanovskyi Avenue progresses, it's essential to note that similar projects are also underway in other parts of the city. For instance, Khreshchatyk Street will experience partial closures for road repairs, highlighting the city's commitment to improving urban infrastructure. These efforts aim to enhance not only traffic flow but also pedestrian safety across Kyiv.
