Two Fraudsters Posing as SBU Agents Swindle $28,700 from Kyiv Pensioner

Шахраї, що видали себе за співробітників СБУ, обманом витягли з киянки чималу суму грошей.

Kyiv Police Bust Impersonation Scam Targeting Elderly Woman

Authorities in Kyiv have charged two individuals with fraud after they allegedly posed as officers from Ukraine's Security Service (SBU) to deceive a 75-year-old pensioner. The victim lost $28,700 and €100 in the scheme. Police detained the suspects and conducted searches, seizing mobile phones, 18,000 Ukrainian hryvnias, $2,900, and €50 as evidence.

How the Scam Worked and Legal Ramifications

The perpetrators contacted the woman via a messaging app, staging an online interrogation. They even brought in a fake SBU colonel to add credibility. A criminal case has been opened under Article 190, Part 5 of Ukraine's Criminal Code, which covers large-scale fraud. If convicted, the suspects face up to 12 years in prison and asset forfeiture.

A court has ordered both suspects to be held in pretrial detention. Bail has been set at 1.2 million hryvnias for one suspect and 2 million hryvnias for the other. The arrest was carried out by the KORD special operations unit. This incident follows a recent case in Kyiv where two elderly women lost 3 million hryvnias in a similar fake SBU inspection scam, highlighting how widespread such schemes have become.

This case underscores a serious fraud problem affecting senior citizens, especially as digital communication expands. The tactic used by the criminals shows how scammers adapt their methods to exploit trust and deceive victims. Raising public awareness and supporting older adults in recognizing these risks is crucial to preventing further losses.

This recent incident is not isolated, as similar schemes targeting the elderly have been reported in Kyiv. For instance, a mastermind behind a fraudulent chaplain scheme managed to swindle $25,000 from individuals attempting to evade military service. Such cases highlight the pressing need for increased vigilance among seniors and the community to combat these deceptive tactics.
