Deserter Threatens to Blow Up Building and Commit Suicide in Kyiv

Дезертир викликав небезпеку, погрожуючи підірвати будівлю та вчинити акт самогубства в Києві.

Incident in Kyiv's Shevchenkivskyi District

A military serviceman who had gone AWOL was detained in the Shevchenkivskyi district of Kyiv after threatening to blow up an apartment building and take his own life. The incident occurred on Turchyna Street. According to a witness, the man was releasing gas inside his apartment and declared that he had "had enough of everything" and intended to detonate the multi-story building.

An emergency call was made to the 102 hotline by a Kyiv resident, prompting police units and State Emergency Service (DSNS) teams to rush to the scene. Upon arrival, law enforcement discovered that the suspect was absent without leave (AWOL). Wearing his military uniform, he stepped onto the balcony, pressed a knife to his throat, and warned that if officers stormed the apartment, he would slit his own throat and detonate grenades.

Negotiations and Arrest

To de-escalate the situation, the head of the district police department, Ihor Padiuk, entered the man's residence. After brief negotiations, he successfully persuaded the Kyiv resident to surrender. The suspect has now been taken into custody, and searches are underway in his apartment for explosives, weapons, or other hazardous materials. The circumstances surrounding the incident are still being investigated.

Separately, authorities received a report from a 52-year-old local woman who threatened to blow up the police administration building with a grenade. At the time of the call, she was at home, but during communication with law enforcement, she provided no clear reason for her actions. The situation in the Shevchenkivskyi district remains under police control.

This incident highlights the critical need for swift responses by law enforcement in life-threatening situations. The arrest of a serviceman who resorted to suicidal threats underscores the severity of the case and raises concerns about potential psychological issues among military personnel. Meanwhile, the threat from the woman points to a possible trend of similar cases in the region, prompting worries about public mental health. Police continue to monitor the situation to prevent future occurrences.

The alarming situation in Kyiv is reminiscent of other recent crises, such as the tragic supermarket siege that resulted in fatalities and injuries.
