Kyiv Supermarket Siege Ends in Tragedy: Attacker Killed, Multiple Casualties Reported
Hostage Crisis and Fatal Shooting Unfold in Kyiv
According to Главком: A gunman, identified as a 58-year-old native of Moscow, opened fire in Kyiv's Holosiivskyi district, killing four people. Following the shootings, he barricaded himself inside a supermarket and took hostages. The incident highlights the complex security challenges facing Ukraine's capital, which remains on a war footing. The KORD special operations unit of the National Police ultimately neutralized the attacker, but not before further casualties occurred.
Preliminary reports indicate the assailant used an automatic weapon. During the subsequent assault by KORD officers, the gunman fired at police. Ten people, including one child, were hospitalized as a result of the shooting. The Kyiv city prosecutor arrived promptly at the scene to oversee the operation.
"KORD special forces of the National Police stormed the store where the criminal was located. He had taken people hostage and fired at police during the arrest. Negotiators had previously attempted to make contact with him," reported Ihor Klymenko.
Simultaneously with the supermarket siege, a fire broke out in the apartment where the attacker was registered. In a separate armed incident in Kyiv's Sviatoshynskyi district, a dispute between acquaintances ended in a shooting, leaving a woman with a leg wound. These violent events have sparked public concern about urban safety. In a related context, Kyiv residents have officially declared a significant number of firearms in private hands:
- 1,119 firearms
- Nearly 300,000 rounds of ammunition
This tragic case underscores growing security concerns in Kyiv and the urgent need for more effective controls on the circulation of firearms. As citizens actively declare their weapons, authorities and law enforcement must find solutions to prevent similar incidents in the future and ensure public safety.
