October 27 Missile Strike Destroys Kyiv’s Southern Bridge, Halting Traffic and Causing Casualties

Missile Attack Devastates Kyiv’s Southern Bridge Overnight

In the early hours of October 27, Kyiv suffered a missile strike targeting the Southern Bridge, resulting in a large crater that forced the complete closure of the crossing for all vehicles in both directions. This disruption also affected the metro system, with trains temporarily suspended between the Osokorky and Chervony Khutir stations. Restrictions were imposed on both the red and green metro lines.

The attack injured 14 people, nine of whom required hospitalization. Tragically, a 46-year-old woman lost her life. Ukrainian authorities have tasked the Ministry of Restoration, Infrastructure, and Transport with expediting repairs to the Southern Bridge, as confirmed by Serhiy Koretskyi.

Repeated Attacks on the Southern Bridge

This missile strike is the latest in a series of assaults on the Southern Bridge. On October 1, two drones struck near the bridge’s support structures, halting metro and surface public transportation. The next night, Russian forces hit the bridge for a third time, damaging its structure, followed by a fourth drone attack on October 2.

Due to ongoing transportation restrictions, the green metro line continues to operate only between Syrets and Vydubychi stations. Train service between Vydubychi and Chervony Khutir remains suspended, with stations along this segment serving as emergency shelters. To ease pressure on the red line, a temporary bus route has been launched across the Darnytskyi Bridge.

Starting October 28, Ukrzaliznytsia introduced additional Kyiv City Express train services crossing the Darnytskyi and Northern bridges. These extra trains stop at the following stations:

  • Berezniaky
  • Darnytsia
  • Rusanivka
  • Livoberezhna
  • Mykilska Slobidka
  • Voskresenka
  • Raiduzhny

The first evening departures from Vydubychi and Pochaina are scheduled for 15:57 and 15:59, respectively.

It’s important to note that prior to the attack, plans were in place to reduce lanes on the Southern Bridge from October 27 to November 1 for road surface repairs. Drivers were advised to seek alternative routes, according to Oleksii Biloshytskyi.

This incident highlights the ongoing risks Kyiv faces amid the persistent conflict. Strikes on vital infrastructure like the Southern Bridge have significant impacts on urban transportation and public safety. Swift restoration efforts and reliable alternative routes are essential to maintaining the city’s daily functions and resilience.

The ongoing situation surrounding the Southern Bridge has raised concerns about the metro service in Kyiv. As authorities work to restore normalcy, the metro is preparing to resume operations across the bridge, pending expert evaluations. This development could significantly alleviate transportation challenges faced by commuters in the wake of repeated attacks on this critical infrastructure.
