Kyiv Metro Prepares to Resume Train Service Across Southern Bridge Pending Expert Assessment
Plans to Restart Train Operations on the Southern Bridge
According to Рубрика — Суспільство: The Kyiv Metro has announced its readiness to resume train services over the Southern Bridge during a yellow alert level, contingent upon receiving an expert evaluation of the bridge’s structural integrity from scientific institutions. This update was provided by Kyiv’s Mayor, Vitali Klitschko, during a meeting of the city’s Defense Council, where transport safety between the Dnipro River’s banks was a central topic.
To obtain the necessary expert report, Ukraine’s Ministry for Communities and Territories Development has engaged scientific research bodies. The Defense Council meeting included military personnel, law enforcement, emergency services, and municipal representatives. All recommendations discussed will be forwarded to national authorities to ensure reliable logistics and connectivity between Kyiv’s left and right riverbanks.
Current Transport Challenges
Train and surface public transport services crossing the Southern Bridge were suspended after repeated attacks targeting critical infrastructure. On the night of October 2, Russian forces struck the Southern Bridge for the third time, causing damage to the bridge’s support structures, barriers, road lanes, and the metro’s protective concrete barriers. Earlier, on the morning of October 1, two drones struck near the bridge’s supporting elements, forcing metro specialists to cut power to the railway tracks for safety reasons.
Following the nighttime assault, the Southern Bridge, along with Paton and Metro bridges, was temporarily closed to public transport. Currently, all public transit is rerouted over the Darnytskyi Bridge. These disruptions have significantly strained the city’s transport network.
“Kyiv is facing an extremely dire situation. Pretending that life can continue as normal during wartime is no longer possible. The enemy is systematically destroying the city - critical infrastructure, logistics networks, housing, and social facilities. Energy systems are also under renewed attack. We are doing everything possible to maintain the city’s vital functions amid relentless destruction, where the issue is no longer comfort but survival and safety.”
- Vitali Klitschko
The ongoing assaults on Kyiv’s infrastructure continue to create severe transport challenges, directly impacting daily life. The future reopening of the Southern Bridge for metro trains depends entirely on expert safety assessments, highlighting the crucial role of scientific analysis in crisis management. If restored, the bridge will relieve pressure on alternative routes and improve connectivity between the city’s riverbanks. Nevertheless, persistent threats require vigilant monitoring and swift action by city authorities to protect residents and maintain essential services.
As the Kyiv Metro prepares to resume operations, it's essential to consider the broader context of transport disruptions in the city. Recent incidents, including drone strikes, have impacted surface transport as well.
